Manchester United's new Luke Shaw season ends early! Winter window misstep hinders development, Championship team criticizes

Manchester United's left-back Harry Amass, loaned to the Championship this season, originally had ideal development conditions. However, after the club recalled him from Sheffield Wednesday in the winter window and transferred him to Norwich, the situation drastically changed. In February, Amass, who had just joined the new team, suffered a training injury and returned to Carrington for treatment. He will not return to the Championship now, and his first-team season has been forced to end.

The British "The Sun" reported that Manchester United originally did not want to terminate the loan contract, hoping Amass would return to Norwich to complete the six-month loan agreement. However, after examination by Manchester United's medical team, Amass is now expected to stay at Manchester United until the end of the season. Amass, who joined in September 2023, has not yet met the duration to be considered a Manchester United academy player, and due to lack of registration, he definitely cannot play for the first team in the Premier League.

In the first half of this season, Amass performed quite excellently while at Sheffield Wednesday, winning the team's best player award for two consecutive months. Sheffield Wednesday hoped to keep him until the end of the season. However, Manchester United refused to extend the loan because Sheffield Wednesday was bottom of the table and relegation was certain. At that time, up to 12 teams were interested in loaning Amass, and the Red Devils chose to loan him to Norwich, a mid-table "Canaries."

Amass, nicknamed "the new Luke Shaw," made a substitute debut and helped Norwich defeat top-ranked Coventry. Unfortunately, a few days later, he suffered a serious training injury, diagnosed as a hamstring issue. Manchester United brought him back for treatment, which Norwich manager Philip Clement expressed disappointment about.

Norwich manager criticized: "We hoped Harry (Amass)'s situation would be different. But Manchester United owns the player, and they decided not to let him come here for rehabilitation nor return for the final weeks. We wish it weren't so. I won't say what Harry wants, that's his own matter, but that's the reality. Manchester United owns the player, and they decided to keep him at the club until the season ends."

This is already the second controversy Amass has faced this season related to a manager. Former Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim publicly criticized academy players for being unreliable, specifically naming Amass. The young English player posted photos on social media showing his best awards to counter, and was again scolded by Amorim for not communicating face-to-face to resolve issues but complaining online. Notably, when Amorim was dismissed, Amass publicly thanked the Portuguese, displaying his English gentlemanly demeanor.

Unfortunately, Manchester United's two loan decisions in the winter window also proved to be mistakes. Toby Collier, loaned to Championship side Hull City, also suffered a serious injury and did not get the expected development. This summer, Manchester United hoped that after a season of practical testing, some young players could join the first team as substitutes. But now, perhaps only goalkeeper Radek Vitek, also in the Championship with Bristol City, has the ability to do so.

Vitek has become one of the Championship's best goalkeepers, attracting interest from many teams. Manchester United hopes the 22-year-old Czech goalkeeper will stay as a second keeper, but after experiencing being a starter this season, he desires consistent playing opportunities rather than sitting on the bench.

Manchester United might sell Vitek while his value is high to gain substantial profit. In summer 2023, the club earned £22.7 million from selling academy goalkeepers Dean Henderson (£15 million) and Matěj Kovář (£7.7 million).

But this does not solve the problem of Sanaa Lames lacking an ideal substitute. Some believe Manchester United should try to persuade Vitek to stay. Michael Carrick's team aims to return to the Champions League, and Vitek as a backup goalkeeper could start in domestic cup matches.
